UN Sees Diplomatic Progress, Warns of Escalation in Lebanon

(MENAFN) The United Nations on Monday expressed cautious optimism that urgent diplomatic efforts may help prevent a wider regional escalation, even as officials warned that the situation on the ground in Lebanon is rapidly worsening amid continued Israeli military advances.

During an emergency session of the UN Security Council on Lebanon, Martha Ama Akyaa Pobee, Assistant Secretary-General for Africa in the Departments of Political and Peacebuilding Affairs and Peace Operations, said there were early signs that intensive diplomatic engagement could be producing results.

"We welcome reports from a short time ago today that intense diplomatic efforts may be yielding results and averting further escalation," she said.

However, she cautioned that the developments in Lebanon represent a serious deterioration that risks undermining fragile ceasefire understandings and ongoing mediation efforts.

She said the situation “mark[s] a dangerous and alarming escalation, directly undermining the cessation of hostilities understanding announced by the United States on 16 April and eroding fragile diplomatic efforts to de-escalate the situation.”

Pobee also highlighted concerning regional spillover risks, referring to reported remarks from Tehran suggesting broader retaliation steps, including suspension of talks with the United States and potential actions involving the Strait of Hormuz.

According to those reports, Iran warned it could “suspend dialogue with the United States, block the Strait of Hormuz and activate other fronts” in response to the unfolding situation in Lebanon.
